Bharti Airtel has unveiled India’s first AI-powered spam detection solution. This new tool is designed to shield customers from unsolicited promotional calls and texts, a problem that has become widespread in recent years.
Promotional voice calls and messages from unregistered marketers have increasingly disrupted the daily lives of mobile phone users. Bharti Airtel’s solution aims to counter this menace by providing real-time alerts for suspected spam calls and SMS, ensuring that customers are protected from potential scams and unwanted interruptions.
Airtel announced that the spam detection solution is completely free for its customers and will be automatically activated without the need for service requests or additional apps. Gopal Vittal, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Airtel, expressed the company’s commitment to addressing the issue:
“Spam has become a menace for customers. We have spent the last twelve months to solve this comprehensively,” Vittal said during the announcement.
According to Airtel, its AI-powered system has already detected a staggering 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam SMS messages daily. “For us, keeping our customers secure is a burning priority,” Vittal added.
Developed by Airtel’s in-house data science team, the solution relies on a proprietary algorithm that accurately flags suspected spam by analyzing patterns in calls and messages. By classifying these communications as “Suspected SPAM,” Airtel’s system offers an additional layer of security to its users.
A notable feature of the solution is its ability to scan SMS messages in real time for malicious links. To safeguard users from accidentally clicking on dangerous URLs, Airtel has created a centralized database of blacklisted sites. If a suspicious link is detected in a message, the AI algorithm will immediately warn the user.
The launch of this system comes shortly after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) implemented new regulations aimed at curbing the influx of spam calls. TRAI has mandated that all service providers prevent unregistered telemarketers from making promotional calls, whether pre-recorded or otherwise.
Airtel’s spam detection tool is expected to be a game-changer in India’s battle against spam, offering millions of users enhanced protection against fraudulent activities.
