Nilokheri Assembly constituency candidate Amar Singh, who was previously contesting under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) banner, has joined the Congress in a major political development ahead of the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. The announcement came during a press briefing on Wednesday, where Singh, along with several of his supporters, officially shifted allegiance to the Congress in the presence of senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa.

Speaking at the press conference, Bajwa, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in Punjab, welcomed Amar Singh and praised his decision to back the Congress candidate in Nilokheri.

“The BJP will get a huge benefit if the votes get divided in Haryana. I am thankful to Amar Singh and his supporters for extending support to the Congress candidate from the Nilokheri Assembly constituency. He has decided to withdraw his candidature from the assembly constituency. I welcome him into the Congress party,” said Bajwa.

The political shift comes just days before voting begins, further intensifying the contest in Haryana’s Nilokheri constituency. Amar Singh’s decision to exit the AAP and support the Congress candidate is seen as a strategic move that could influence the outcome in the tightly contested region.

With polling scheduled for October 5, political parties are ramping up their final efforts to gain voter support. Senior leaders from major parties, including the BJP, Congress, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), AAP, and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), are actively campaigning across the state, each hoping to secure crucial constituencies.

One of the key battlegrounds in this election is Nuh, which gained national attention due to the violent riots that occurred between July and August 2023. Aftab Ahmed, the Congress candidate for Nuh, is seeking re-election after securing the seat in 2019. Meanwhile, the BJP has nominated Sanjay Singh, who successfully contested the Sohna seat in the previous elections.

In a rally on October 2, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar expressed confidence that the BJP would secure a historic third consecutive term in Haryana. “The BJP will be creating a record, as no other party has achieved a third consecutive term in Haryana. Congress has only managed two terms and could not secure a third,” Khattar said.

Haryana’s election will take place across 90 Assembly constituencies, with voting scheduled for October 5 from 7 AM to 6 PM. The results will be declared on October 8. In the 2019 elections, the BJP won 40 out of 90 seats, forming a coalition government with the JJP, which secured 10 seats. The Congress came in second with 31 seats.
