In a stunning display of environmental commitment, Goa’s Betalbatim beach transformed into a hub of activity as over 250 volunteers gathered for the International Day for Clean-Up 2024. This event, held under India’s G20 Presidency, marked a significant milestone in the nation’s ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (Cleanliness is Service) initiative.
A Unified Effort for Cleaner Shores
The beach cleanup drive, organized collaboratively by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and the Department of Environment and Climate Change, showcased the power of collective action in addressing marine pollution. Participants from diverse backgrounds, including members of the Indian Navy, Coast Guards, local residents, and students, joined forces to combat the growing threat of ocean waste.
Shri Alexio Sequeira, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, who served as the Chief Guest, emphasized the importance of such initiatives.
High-Profile Support and Local Engagement
The event saw attendance from several distinguished guests, including Dr. Pradip Sarmokadam, Member Secretary of the Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB). Local leadership was well-represented, with Sarpanchs from nearby villages and Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) chairpersons actively participating in the cleanup efforts.
Beyond Cleanup: Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles
While the immediate goal was to rid the beach of litter, the event served a broader purpose. It aimed to promote public participation, or ‘Jan Bhagidari’, in environmental conservation efforts. Organizers used the platform to educate participants about sustainable lifestyle choices that can help reduce marine pollution at its source.
