In a move set to revolutionize India’s cruise tourism sector, Goa is preparing to unveil a cutting-edge, eco-friendly cruise terminal at Mormugao Port in March 2025. This development promises to transform the way tourists experience India’s vibrant coastal regions.
A Surge in Cruise Tourism
Goa, already a popular tourist destination known for its pristine beaches and vibrant culture, is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing trend of cruise tourism. The state has witnessed an impressive 40% increase in cruise passenger arrivals during the 2023-2024 period, according to a report by India’s CNBC TV18. This surge in interest has set the stage for the ambitious new terminal project.
Bridging the Gap in India’s Cruise Infrastructure
The new terminal at Mormugao Port is designed to accommodate both domestic and international cruise liners, addressing a significant gap in India’s current cruise tourism offerings. At present, only a handful of major ports such as Mumbai, Kolkata, and Kochi can host international cruises, limiting options for both operators and tourists. Goa’s new facility aims to expand these possibilities dramatically.
A Modern Travel Hub
Spanning an impressive 9,960 square meters, the new terminal is set to become a modern travel hub equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Passengers will benefit from:
- 24 immigration counters
- 10 check-in counters
- Comprehensive baggage facilities
- Duty-free shops
- Lounges
- A food court
- A ferry terminal
- Landscaped gardens
This array of amenities is designed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for cruise passengers, from arrival to departure.
Government Support and Ambitious Goals
The development of Goa’s new cruise terminal is part of a larger national initiative to boost cruise tourism in India. Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has announced that construction is underway for “state-of-the-art International & Domestic Cruise Terminals across India.” The government has set an ambitious target of welcoming 1.5 million cruise tourists by 2030.
Goa: A Rising Star in Cruise Tourism
Mormugao Port has already been experiencing an upward trajectory in cruise traffic. In the 2018-2019 season alone, the port managed 35 vessels and served 47,778 passengers. This December, seven international cruise liners are expected to dock, bringing approximately 12,584 passengers to Goa’s shores.
One of the notable vessels currently calling at Mormugao Port is Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Millennium. This ship offers an enticing itinerary that takes passengers through India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Cruise-goers can enjoy excursions to historic forts and museums, participate in a traditional Goan tea ceremony, and explore Goa’s charming capital, Panaji.
Strategic Location and Future Potential
While Goa currently lacks direct international cruise routes, its strategic location near popular tourism destinations makes it an attractive departure point for travelers. Other Indian cities, such as Chennai and Mumbai, already serve as gateways to international destinations, and Goa’s new terminal will further enhance India’s cruise tourism offerings.
The Indian government’s plan to position the country to handle 1,000 world-class vessels puts Goa at the forefront of various cruise experiences, including deep-sea, coastal, river, and yacht cruises. This diversification is expected to cater to a wide range of preferences and budgets, making cruise tourism more accessible to both domestic and international travelers.
