Minister for Environment Aleixo Sequeira called on students and the public to honor the legacy of Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes by embracing education, social justice, and civic responsibility during a commemoration event on Monday. The event, marking Dr. Gomes’ death anniversary, took place at Ashmitai Bhuim in Navelim, where Sequeira urged the community to reflect on the values and contributions of this iconic Goan figure.

In his address, Sequeira emphasized the importance of integrating Dr. Gomes’ ideals into daily life, noting how his dedication to social reform and justice continues to resonate in modern society. “In celebrating Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes, we not only acknowledge his achievements but also embrace the spirit of resilience and hope he embodies. His efforts to reform education laid a foundation that continues to benefit generations in Goa,” Sequeira remarked.

Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes, who was a staunch advocate against slavery and fought tirelessly for the principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity, has left an indelible mark on both Goa and the broader Portuguese empire. Sequeira emphasized that Dr. Gomes’ legacy should serve as an enduring source of inspiration for all, particularly in the areas of education and social responsibility.

“Dr. Gomes stood firmly against social and economic injustices committed on colonized peoples. His commitment to bettering society is something that we should carry forward,” Sequeira added.

Call for Integration into Curriculum

Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, echoed Sequeira’s sentiments but also highlighted the need for institutional action. Fr. Coutinho urged the government to incorporate Dr. Gomes’ teachings into the school curriculum, arguing that it would enrich the students’ educational experience and foster a deeper understanding of civic duties.

“Studying Dr. Gomes’ life and achievements would provide invaluable inspiration to the student community. By learning about his contributions, students can appreciate the importance of education, resilience, and civic responsibility,” said Fr. Coutinho.

He stressed that embedding these lessons in the educational system would ensure that future generations are not only aware of Dr. Gomes’ legacy but also equipped with the knowledge and values necessary to contribute meaningfully to society.

Celebrating a Global Icon

During the state government’s function, Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar, former MP Luizinho Faleiro, and Chairperson of the Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes Memorial Trust were also in attendance. Faleiro, in his remarks, announced that Dr. Gomes’ 200th birth anniversary would be celebrated with “great pomp and grandeur.”

“I have strived hard all along my life to propagate his ideas,” said Faleiro. “I am very proud of Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes’ life; he was a genius, a learned historian, a great patriot, an eminent economist, and a brilliant novelist.”

He added that Dr. Gomes was not only recognized as a leading intellectual in India but also across Europe, where he earned the title of “prince of intellectuals.”

Faleiro expressed gratitude to the Goa government for fulfilling their commitment to commemorate Dr. Gomes’ death anniversary at the state level, ensuring that his contributions continue to be celebrated and recognized.
