Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress General Secretary, strongly condemned the killing of a migrant labourer in the Shopian district of Kashmir on Saturday, emphasizing that the entire nation stands united against such heinous acts.

The victim, Ashok Chauhan, a migrant labourer from Bihar, was found dead with bullet injuries on Friday in Shopian, a region in Jammu and Kashmir known for frequent instances of violence. The incident, which is believed to be carried out by terrorists, has sparked widespread outrage across India.

In her reaction, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her deep disapproval of the violence and said, “The killing of a labourer from Bihar by terrorists in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir is extremely disgusting and condemnable. The violence and target killings being carried out by terrorists are unacceptable. The entire nation stands united against such acts and strongly condemns them.” She shared this message on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Leaders express solidarity

The killing has also drawn strong condemnation from other key political figures, including Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Both expressed their grief and outrage, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.

Manoj Sinha, in a post on X, condemned the brutal killing of Ashok Chauhan, calling the terrorists “cowardly.” He added, “The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with his family. Our security forces are determined to hunt down the culprits and bring them to justice.” Sinha further directed the Jammu Kashmir Police and the District Administration to provide all necessary support to Chauhan’s family during this difficult time.

CM Omar Abdullah, also condemned the killing. “Very sorry to hear about the death of Ashok Chauhan at the hands of militants in South Kashmir. These attacks are abhorrent and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. I send my condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” Abdullah said.

Rising concerns over migrant workers’ safety

The killing of migrant workers in Kashmir has raised concerns about the safety and security of those who travel to the region in search of work. This is not the first time such incidents have taken place. The targeting of non-local labourers, especially those from Bihar, has been a recurring issue, putting additional pressure on security forces in the region.

The government has been working to address the safety of migrant workers, but the recurring violence continues to paint a grim picture of the region’s struggle with militancy.

Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have vowed to step up their efforts to crack down on the militants responsible for these attacks. The region has witnessed a heightened security presence in recent years, but these incidents continue to challenge the ongoing peace efforts.

Nationwide condemnation

The killing of Ashok Chauhan has sparked nationwide condemnation, with people from various walks of life expressing their anger and grief. Social media platforms are flooded with messages of support for the victim’s family and calls for stricter measures to prevent such tragedies.
