Kolkata-based Mohammedan SC achieved a remarkable feat in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25, becoming only the fifth team in ISL history to win their debut away fixture. A solitary goal from Lalremsanga Fanai sealed a 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, marking a memorable night for the Black and White Brigade.
A Strong Start for Chennaiyin FC
Chennaiyin FC, backed by their home crowd, started the match with intent, pushing Mohammedan SC deep into their defensive third from the opening whistle. The Marina Machans, as Chennaiyin are fondly known, almost took an early lead in the fifth minute. Connor Shields delivered a precise corner kick, finding Irfan Yadwad, whose header narrowly missed the target, leaving the fans gasping.
Shields continued to be the creative force for Chennaiyin, orchestrating another dangerous moment in the 13th minute. His cross into Mohammedan SC’s box was met by goalkeeper Padam Chettri, who could only partially clear it. The ball fell kindly for Lalrinliana Hnamte, but his shot was deflected wide, denying Chennaiyin an early breakthrough.
Mohammedan SC Capitalize on Defensive Error
While Chennaiyin FC had the better chances early on, Mohammedan SC slowly grew into the game. Their first real chance came in the 33rd minute when a misdirected header from Chennaiyin’s Laldinliana Renthlei gifted Alexis Gomez an opportunity. The Argentine midfielder dribbled past Chennaiyin goalkeeper Samik Mitra, only to hit the post, letting Chennaiyin off the hook.
However, the relentless pressure from Mohammedan SC paid off just six minutes later. A misplaced pass from Chennaiyin defender PC Laldinpuia, intended for his goalkeeper Mitra, was poorly judged. Mitra, caught off his line, allowed Lalremsanga Fanai to intercept and calmly slot the ball into the net, giving Mohammedan SC a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.
Second Half Fightback Fails for Chennaiyin
Chennaiyin FC came out after the break with renewed vigor, seeking an equalizer. In the 54th minute, they came close when Lukas Brambilla delivered a threatening corner into Mohammedan SC’s penalty area. However, Ryan Edwards’ poorly timed header sent the ball wide, much to the frustration of the home crowd.
In a bid to turn the game around, Chennaiyin coach Owen Coyle made several substitutions, hoping that fresh legs could bring some spark to the team. But Mohammedan SC, under the tactical guidance of Andrey Chernyshov, remained disciplined and resilient in defense.
As the match drew to a close, Chennaiyin FC came agonizingly close to leveling the score. In the 94th minute, Lukas Brambilla had a golden opportunity to salvage a point when Wilmar Jordan Gil’s header found him unmarked in front of the goal. However, a heroic effort from Gaurav Bora and Vanlalzuidika Chhakchhuak combined to clear the ball off the line, preserving Mohammedan SC’s lead.
Fanai: The Hero of the Night
Lalremsanga Fanai not only scored the decisive goal but was a standout performer throughout the game. His contribution extended beyond the scoreline as he set up teammate Mirjalol Kasimov for a long-range effort and made crucial defensive interventions, including a tackle and two clearances.
Fanai’s heroics ensured Mohammedan SC left Chennai with all three points in their bag, marking a historic debut in the ISL.
Looking Ahead
Chennaiyin FC will look to regroup as they prepare for their next match, an away fixture against Hyderabad FC on October 1. Meanwhile, Mohammedan SC faces a highly anticipated clash against city rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Kolkata Derby on October 5, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter.
