Low-Pressure System in Bay of Bengal to Bring Heavy Rains to Parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh

Reading Time: 3mins

A low-pressure system has formed over the West Central Bay of Bengal, bringing the possibility of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to areas adjoining the northwest Bay, particularly off the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha. This system is expected to influence weather conditions in the coming days, leading to varied rainfall patterns across multiple regions.

A significant weather feature, known as a shear zone, is currently positioned along the latitude of 16°N over the northern peninsular region of India. This zone extends from 3.1 km to 7.6 km above sea level and tilts southward with increasing altitude. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in specific areas, including Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Tirupattur districts in Tamil Nadu, cautioning residents of potential isolated downpours in these regions.

For September 24 and 25, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected across parts of North Tamil Nadu. Additionally, intermittent rain is forecast at a few locations in South Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area. As the system progresses, light to moderate showers are predicted to occur sporadically across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal between September 26 and 30.

Strong surface winds, with speeds reaching 30-40 km/h, are expected to affect Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal tomorrow, adding to the volatile weather conditions.

The IMD forecast also suggests a likelihood of moderate rain with thunderstorms in North Tamil Nadu over the next seven days. Meanwhile, temperatures across the state could rise 2-4°C above normal, leading to hot and uncomfortable conditions in isolated areas. High humidity combined with soaring temperatures will contribute to this discomfort, making the weather challenging for many.

Chennai and its surrounding suburbs are expected to experience partly cloudy skies over the next 24 hours, with the possibility of thunderstorms and light to moderate rain in some areas. The city’s maximum temperature is forecast to hover around 36-37°C, with a minimum temperature between 26-27°C.

As the system continues to develop, residents across the impacted regions are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks from thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain.
