Former Goa tourism minister Mickky Pacheco took a swipe at Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, asking him to “set things right in his own backyard before stepping into someone else’s.”

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the former Nuvem MLA criticised Viegas for allegedly interfering in Betalbatim under the pretext of helping local farmers. Pacheco questioned the logic behind digging a 1.5-metre-deep trench for water drainage from fields, claiming it was excessive and unnecessary. “A one-foot trench would have done the job,” he said.

He warned that such actions, done without local consultation, could harm both the fields and the ecosystem. “Farming decisions should be taken by those who work the land, not by politicians trying to make a show,” Pacheco said.

The former minister said interventions must be rooted in ground realities and local experience to avoid doing more harm than good.
