Bengaluru FC launched their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 campaign on a high note, securing a 1-0 victory against East Bengal at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday evening. The match was decided by a single goal from Vinith Venkatesh, marking a dream debut for the Bengaluru FC academy graduate.

A Tense Start

The game began with both teams adopting a cautious approach, resulting in numerous tackles that disrupted the flow of play. East Bengal’s Nandha Kumar received an early yellow card for a reckless challenge on Suresh Wangjam, setting the tone for a physically intense match. Lalchungnunga and Hector Yuste also found their names in the referee’s book as the first half progressed.

Breakthrough Moment

After a series of near misses from both sides, Bengaluru FC broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Edgar Mendez orchestrated a brilliant move, finding Vinith Venkatesh in space on the right. The 19-year-old showcased his skill with an exceptional touch before firing the ball into the bottom corner, giving the home team the lead.

Second Half Struggles

The second half mirrored the first, with aggressive play dominating the midfield. East Bengal had several opportunities to equalize, with Nandha Kumar coming close with a thunderous effort that was expertly saved by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

Both managers made strategic substitutions in an attempt to influence the game. East Bengal’s Carles Cuadrat introduced Madih Talal, while Bengaluru FC’s Gerard Zaragoza brought on Jorge Pereyra Diaz and Ryan Williams to bolster their attack.

Late Drama

East Bengal’s hopes of salvaging a point were dealt a severe blow in the 87th minute when Lalchungnunga received a second yellow card, reducing the visitors to ten men. Despite creating several chances throughout the match, East Bengal ultimately fell short.

Star of the Show

Vinith Venkatesh’s performance was the highlight of the evening. The young midfielder, who had impressed during the recent Durand Cup, carried his form into the ISL season. In his 45 minutes on the pitch, Venkatesh not only scored the decisive goal but also maintained a 77% passing accuracy.

Looking Ahead

East Bengal FC will look to bounce back as they travel to Kochi to face Kerala Blasters on September 22. Meanwhile, Bengaluru FC will aim to build on their winning start when they host Hyderabad FC in their next ISL 2024-25 fixture on September 19.

Final Score:
Bengaluru FC – 1 (Vinith Venkatesh 25′)

East Bengal FC – 0
