In a thrilling match at the 43rd Gold Silver Rolling Trophy Intervillage Football Tournament, Ambelim SC secured their place in the quarterfinals with a decisive 2-0 victory against Betalbatim SC. The match, organized by Navelim Sporting Club, took place on Friday at the Rosary Church Ground in Navelim.
First Half: Missed Opportunities
The first half saw both teams putting their best foot forward, with several near misses keeping spectators on the edge of their seats. Betalbatim SC’s Aniston Fernandes had two early chances in the 6th and 12th minutes but failed to capitalize. Ambelim SC’s Ashwin Pinto also came close to scoring in the 25th minute, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Breakthrough Goal
The deadlock was finally broken in the 29th minute when Nial Cardozo of Ambelim SC executed a brilliant play. After skillfully maneuvering past a couple of Betalbatim SC defenders, Cardozo unleashed a diagonal shot that found its mark, giving Ambelim SC a 1-0 lead.
Betalbatim SC’s Close Calls
Betalbatim SC fought hard to equalize, with Zeben Dias coming close in the 36th minute. However, his attempt was expertly saved by the Ambelim SC goalkeeper. Just four minutes later, Dylan Rodrigues of Betalbatim SC saw his shot denied by the woodwork, as it struck the goalpost in the 40th minute.
Sealing the Victory
Ambelim SC doubled their lead early in the second half, thanks to Velroy Rebello’s persistence. In the 46th minute, Rebello’s initial shot was parried by the Betalbatim SC goalkeeper, but he quickly pounced on the rebound. Using his right foot, Rebello calmly slotted the ball into the net from close range, securing a 2-0 advantage for Ambelim SC.
As the final whistle approached, Betalbatim SC’s Aniston Fernandes had one last chance to reduce the deficit, but his shot narrowly missed the target.
