The Central Government has appointed Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), effective immediately. Rahatkar, who becomes the ninth person to hold this position, succeeds Rekha Sharma, whose tenure ended in August earlier this year.
In an announcement made on X, formerly known as Twitter, the NCW expressed its enthusiasm for Rahatkar’s appointment. “NCW is pleased to share that in pursuance of Section 3, NCW Act, 1990, the Central Government has nominated Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women,” the post read.
Rahatkar brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as the Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women from 2016 to 2021. Additionally, she held the position of Mayor of Chatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) from 2007 to 2010.
The announcement also mentioned the nomination of Smt. Archana Majumdar as a new member of the NCW. This comes as part of the government’s continuing efforts to strengthen the commission, which plays a vital role in addressing women’s issues across India.
A Strong Advocate for Women’s Rights
Rahatkar’s background includes significant academic and professional accomplishments. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics and a master’s degree in History from the University of Pune. She is also an accomplished author, having written books such as “Vidhilikhit,” which focuses on women’s legal issues, and “Aurangabad: Leading to Wide Roads,” a comprehensive look at the city’s development.
Her extensive work in the field of women’s empowerment has earned her national recognition. Among the honors bestowed upon her are the prestigious National Law Award and the Savitribai Phule Award, presented by a national literary council. These accolades reflect her dedication to advancing women’s rights and her influence in shaping policies that protect and empower women.
