Johnny Depp is set to return to the big screen with Ebenezer, a dark reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. The makers have released the film’s first trailer, offering a look at Depp’s portrayal of the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge ahead of its theatrical release on Nov. 13.
The trailer, shared on Instagram, opens with Depp’s character saying, “It’s good to be back,” before depicting Scrooge as he is haunted by the spirits of Christmas throughout the holiday season.
The filmmakers captioned the trailer: “Bah Humbug! Watch the new trailer. Only in theatres November 13.”
Directed by Ti West, Ebenezer reimagines the Dickens story with Depp in the lead role as the miserly and ill-tempered Scrooge. The cast also includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Charlie Murphy, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen.
The film marks Depp’s latest major Hollywood release following his widely publicized legal dispute with former wife Amber Heard. During the defamation trial, both accused each other of domestic abuse, and the jury found both parties liable for defamation on different claims.
Depp has won a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award and has received three Academy Award nominations and two British Academy Film Award nominations.
He began his acting career with A Nightmare on Elm Street before appearing in films including Platoon, Edward Scissorhands, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Benny & Joon, Chocolat, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Ebenezer is scheduled for a theatrical release on Nov. 13.
