Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar has objected to a circular issued by the Directorate of Education requiring students and teachers to attend International Yoga Day programmes on a Sunday, arguing that such a directive affects personal freedom, family time and religious rights.
Chodankar said yoga is an ancient practice that promotes physical and mental well-being and is appreciated by millions around the world. However, he maintained that participation in yoga-related activities should remain voluntary.
“Sunday is the only day when many families get an opportunity to spend quality time together. It is also a day of prayer, worship, and religious observance for several communities in Goa. Parents have every right to decide how their children spend their weekly holiday without interference from the Government,” Chodankar stated.
He questioned the reasoning behind requiring students and teachers to attend official programmes on a designated weekly holiday, saying the directive places additional pressure on families and educational institutions.
“The BJP Government must understand that respect for diversity and individual freedoms is the foundation of Goa’s social fabric. Any attempt to impose participation in activities, irrespective of their merits, goes against democratic values and constitutional principles,” he said.
Chodankar urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the Directorate of Education to withdraw the circular and ensure that participation in Yoga Day events is voluntary.
“Respect family time. Respect religious freedom. Respect the rights of parents and students. The Government must withdraw the compulsory Yoga Day attendance circular without delay,” he said.
