Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte on Monday announced that the state government has extended the existing beach shack policy for another year, retaining the same terms and conditions that have been in place over the past three years.
Addressing the media, Khaunte said the decision was taken following consultations between the Tourism Department and shack associations. The continuation of the policy is intended to provide stability and clarity to shack operators as preparations begin for the upcoming tourism season.
“The policy that has been in force for the last three years will continue with the same terms and conditions,” Khaunte said.
The minister also outlined plans under the government’s “Shackathon” initiative, which aims to equip selected beach stretches with high-speed internet connectivity. The initiative is designed to cater to digital nomads and remote workers by enabling them to work from beach shacks while staying in Goa.
Khaunte said the Tourism Director has assured the department that the process for renewing shack licences will begin shortly under the existing policy framework. According to the minister, all eligible applicants are expected to receive permissions before August 15.
He said the schedule has been planned to ensure that beach shacks are fully operational by September 1, allowing businesses to be ready ahead of the peak tourist season.
The Tourism Department is also set to introduce drone surveillance along the coastline as part of efforts to strengthen monitoring and enforcement. The drones will be used to track illegal touting, littering and encroachments on beaches, enabling authorities to respond more quickly to violations.
Khaunte said the measures are part of broader efforts to improve beach management, enhance the visitor experience and support sustainable tourism practices across Goa.
