Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Venzy Viegas has launched the River Sal Intelligence Pilot Project at Khareband Junction in Benaulim, marking the start of a technology-driven effort to identify and address pollution in the River Sal.

The initiative uses drone technology to conduct continuous and systematic mapping of the river. The surveys are expected to generate precise data to identify key pollution sources such as sewage discharge outlets, garbage dumping zones, and damaged river bunds. Authorities are expected to use this data for targeted and evidence-based intervention.

Speaking at the launch, Viegas said the River Sal has faced severe pollution for several years, citing garbage dumping along its banks and instances of open defecation as major concerns. He said that while awareness campaigns were conducted in the past, there had been no sustained or concrete action to resolve the issue.

He added that earlier beautification efforts were undertaken to curb dumping and improve conditions along the riverbanks, but said a comprehensive solution required scientific assessment and intervention.

According to Viegas, the pilot project will result in a detailed report based on drone survey data, which will be submitted to the relevant authorities for further action. He stated that the project is being funded through his MLA funds and personal salary, and described it as an effort focused on implementation rather than announcements.

Residents from nearby villages welcomed the move, stating that no previous authority or elected representative had taken effective steps to address pollution in the River Sal. They said the use of technology to identify root causes marks a shift from earlier approaches.

The project is expected to help identify sources of contamination including sewage inflow, illegal dumping, and structural damage to bunds, enabling more focused and accountable interventions.

Viegas said the initiative reflects a governance approach centred on proactive action and environmental responsibility. He also called on authorities to act on the findings once the report is submitted.
