Awareness drive at Miramar highlights aquatic animal sentience. Campaign calls attention to global fishing and aquaculture impact.

The Goa Animal Liberation Movement conducted an awareness drive at the Miramar River Promenade on March 28, 2026, to mark the World Day for the End of Fishing and Fish Farming (WoDEF).

The initiative focused on raising awareness about aquatic animals, including fish, crustaceans and octopuses, and their capacity for sentience. Organisers highlighted scientific observations suggesting that certain species, such as salmon, can remember long migratory routes, while crustaceans exhibit responses that indicate the ability to avoid pain beyond reflex actions.

The campaign also drew attention to the scale of fishing and aquaculture globally. According to the organisers, billions of aquatic animals are killed each year, with many subjected to prolonged periods of distress. It was stated that some fish may remain alive for hours after being caught, while aquaculture systems can involve conditions such as overcrowding, low oxygen levels and parasitic infections.

The drive emphasised that aquatic animals are capable of experiencing pain and awareness, and called for greater consideration of their welfare. It also highlighted views within sections of the scientific community that the consumption of aquatic animals is not essential.

Speaking during the event, Gemini Xettigar said, “This awareness drive was conducted to give a voice to aquatic animals who often go unseen and unheard. The scale of suffering they endure is immense, and it is important for society to recognise that these beings are sentient and deserve consideration and compassion. We hope this initiative encouraged people to rethink their choices and support a more humane and sustainable way of living.”

The Goa Animal Liberation Movement noted that similar awareness efforts have been undertaken globally since 2017, with hundreds of organisations participating in activities to mark the occasion each year.
