A labourer lost his life while two others were injured after a landslide struck a retaining wall construction site at Harbour Road in Sada-Vasco on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Manoranjan Bind (40), a native of Jharkhand.

According to sources, the incident occurred while work on a roadside retaining wall was underway in the Sada-Vasco area. A group of labourers had reportedly been working at the site since morning when a section of mud and loose earth suddenly collapsed following overnight rainfall.

There were around four labourers present at the location when the landslide occurred. Sources said three workers managed to escape after noticing the soil giving way, but Bind got trapped beneath the mud and debris.

The collapse triggered panic at the site, with nearby residents and fellow workers raising an alarm and attempting to help the trapped labourer before emergency personnel arrived.

Fire and emergency services personnel later reached the location and launched a rescue operation. After prolonged efforts, rescuers pulled Bind out from under the debris, but he was declared dead.

Two other labourers who sustained injuries in the incident were shifted to hospital for treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.

Police personnel also visited the site and conducted a preliminary inspection. Authorities later cordoned off the area while officials examined the circumstances that led to the collapse.

Continuous rainfall since late Sunday evening is suspected to have weakened the soil and contributed to the landslide, sources said.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of labourers working at construction sites during the monsoon season, particularly in roadside excavation and hill-cutting zones vulnerable to soil collapse.

Further investigation is in progress, and Mormugao police are likely to register an FIR in connection with the death of the labourer.
