Aldona MLA Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira has alleged that law and order in Goa has deteriorated under the BJP government, claiming that criminals are receiving political protection.
Referring to the assault in Socorro on June 18 in which a man later died, Ferreira said the incident reflected poorly on the government, particularly as it occurred in a constituency represented by the BJP.
“This incident shows that the government cannot control law and order. There is doubt that there is a thug and under this thug this goonda raj is going on. We don’t want such types of thugs in Goa. We also don’t want such thugs in Aldona constituency, we will throw them out,” he said.
Ferreira alleged that political patronage was preventing prompt police action against those involved.
“This incident escalated because the person died, had that not happened it would have been a case of grievous assault. That’s when police were under pressure to arrest the accused,” he said.
Calling for a thorough investigation, Ferreira said police should establish the motive behind the assault and determine whether it was a premeditated crime.
“I heard that the person who died after the assault was accused of jewellery theft and he was brought to the police station and the ornament was returned. I heard this was revenge. But the way he was assaulted till he died this is not acceptable. It appears that there was an intention as the accused waited to commit the crime that is murder. Police should conduct a thorough investigation, the motive will be in the hands of the police. The intention will spell out from the motive. This is not an ordinary fight,” he said.
Ferreira maintained that the circumstances surrounding the assault warranted a detailed investigation into both the motive and the events leading to the victim’s death.
