In a significant political development ahead of a no-confidence motion, Sancoale Sarpanch Anusha Lamani resigned from her post on Friday, days before a special meeting scheduled to decide the leadership of the panchayat.
Within hours of her resignation, Deputy Sarpanch Derrick Vales also stepped down, intensifying the political situation within the village body.
Despite resigning from their posts, both Lamani and Vales continue as panch members. Attention is now focused on the special meeting scheduled on Monday, which is expected to determine the future leadership of the eleven-member panchayat.
The no-confidence motion was moved by six members—Tulsidas Naik, Maria Azevedo, Nidhi Naik, Rohini Toraskar, Valento Rodrigues and Jasiya Kadar—who expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of the panchayat.
The members alleged that key decisions were being taken without adequate discussion and with limited participation of other elected representatives. They also raised concerns over irregular meetings, delays in development works, and lack of transparency in administrative functioning.
Among the issues highlighted were delays in constructing a new panchayat ghar despite availability of land and funds, as well as unresolved garbage management concerns.
The twin resignations have heightened political uncertainty in Sancoale, with the upcoming meeting expected to result in new leadership and possible shifts in alliances within the panchayat.
In a related administrative development, Gram Sevak Amol Tilve was transferred with immediate effect on Friday. Yogesh Faterpekar has been appointed as the new full-time secretary of the panchayat.
The appointment follows repeated demands from residents for a full-time secretary, a gap that had affected administrative functioning in one of the state’s largest panchayats.
