Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi created history by smashing the fastest fifty ever recorded in List A cricket during the India A versus Sri Lanka A Tri-Series final at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday.
The 15-year-old opener raced to his half-century in just 11 balls, breaking the previous record of a 12-ball fifty set by Sri Lanka’s Kaushalya Weeraratne 21 years ago.
Sooryavanshi attacked from the outset, striking five fours and five sixes on his way to the landmark. The innings also marked his maiden half-century for India A.
The left-handed batter looked set for a century before Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige dismissed him in the ninth over. He eventually scored 94 runs from just 29 deliveries, an innings featuring 10 fours and eight sixes.
The latest feat adds to a remarkable month for Sooryavanshi. Earlier in June, he earned his first call-up to India’s T20 International squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the 2026 Asian Games.
At 15 years and 71 days old, Sooryavanshi became the youngest player selected for India’s men’s cricket team, surpassing a record that had stood for 36 years.
The previous mark belonged to legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 at the age of 16 years and 205 days. If Sooryavanshi plays during the upcoming tour, he will become the youngest cricketer to debut for India in men’s international cricket.
The record for the youngest Indian men’s T20 International debutant is currently held by Washington Sundar, who was 18 years and 80 days old when he made his debut against Sri Lanka in 2017. Tendulkar also remains India’s youngest ODI debutant, having played his first One-Day International at 16 years and 238 days.
