Goencho Saib, Goenkarancho Saib…

St. Francis Xavier remains a unifying figure for all Goans beyond religion. Concerns rise as divisive rhetoric threatens Goa’s long-standing harmony.

St. Francis Xavier is Goencho Saib not only for Christians, but for every Goan—irrespective of faith, class, or caste. For centuries, he has been revered as a unifying spiritual figure whose devotion transcends religious boundaries. This deep-rooted reverence is a reflection of Goa’s unique cultural fabric—one that binds its people in shared respect and harmony.

Unfortunately, many from outside the state fail to understand this sacred coexistence that defines Goan identity. The recent remarks by Gautam Khattar reveal a troubling lack of awareness and sensitivity toward Goan culture and its people. Such statements do not merely reflect ignorance; they risk undermining the very ethos that has kept Goa united for generations.

Goans revere St. Francis Xavier, Lord Damodar, Lairai Devi, and Lord Parashuram with equal devotion, sanctity, and spiritual depth. This is the Goan way of life—one that does not discriminate between deities or faiths, and one that is nurtured within families across generations. It is a harmony forged over centuries, resilient in the face of change, and foundational to Goa’s identity as a land of peace, tolerance, and shared belonging.

Today, however, this delicate balance faces growing strain. Political opportunism threatens to disrupt the communal harmony that Goans hold sacred. In the pursuit of influence and dominance, individuals with divisive intent are given platforms, often under the guise of faith. Their rhetoric, aimed at provoking and polarizing, endangers the unity that defines the state.

Equally concerning is the role of leaders who, instead of upholding their duty to protect the people and their identity, appear to accommodate such divisive voices. Their presence alongside individuals who make insensitive remarks raises serious questions about their commitment to preserving Goa’s cultural integrity. While condemnations may follow, the damage—once done—cannot be easily undone. For many Goans, this feels like a betrayal.

Goa has long been regarded as a sacred land—God’s own country—where coexistence is not an ideal but a lived reality. Its traditions are safeguarded not only by faith, but by a collective consciousness that values harmony over division. Any attempt to disrupt this balance is bound to face resistance—not through conflict, but through the enduring strength of its people and their shared values.

The spirit of Goa cannot be diminished by divisive rhetoric. Its identity does not bend to provocation. Those who seek to disturb its peace will find that this land stands firm—rooted in unity, guided by respect, and protected by the unwavering resolve of its people.

Goa will remain what it has always been: a land of harmony, dignity, and quiet strength—where every voice that seeks to divide is ultimately drowned out by the enduring chorus of togetherness.
