Novak Djokovic offered a reflective and emotional assessment of his career following his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final of the Australian Open 2026 on Sunday, sparking speculation about his future on the professional tour.

The 22-year-old Alcaraz claimed his maiden Australian Open title with a four-set victory, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in a gripping contest that lasted three hours and two minutes. The win marked Alcaraz’s seventh Grand Slam title and his first triumph in Melbourne.

Speaking after the final, Djokovic described his journey at the tournament as memorable and expressed deep gratitude to the fans for their support.

“God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six months or 12 months. It has been a great ride. I love you guys,” Djokovic said during the on-court presentation. He added that the support he received during the latter stages of the tournament was unlike anything he had previously experienced in Australia.

“The love, the support, the positivity — it has been incredible. I always believe in myself, and I think that is truly needed when you are playing at this level,” he said.

The 38-year-old Serbian also admitted he did not expect to reach another Grand Slam final and credited the crowd for motivating him throughout the fortnight.

“I must be very honest and say that I didn’t think I would be standing in the closing ceremony of a Grand Slam once again. I owe you the gratitude for pushing me forward over the last couple of weeks,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic last won a Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2023. In 2025, he reached the semi-finals of all four majors but was unable to progress to a final.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, described his Australian Open triumph as the result of years of sustained effort and emotional perseverance. He said his pre-season had been challenging and credited his team for guiding him through difficult moments.

“Nobody knows how hard I have been working to get this trophy. I chased this moment so much,” Alcaraz said, adding that the support from his team helped him stay focused on doing the right things each day.

After the final, Alcaraz paid tribute to Djokovic, calling him an inspiration for athletes across sports. He praised the Serbian’s work ethic, consistency and longevity, and said it was an honour to share the court and locker room with him.

With the victory, Alcaraz became the sixth man in the Open Era to complete a Career Grand Slam. At 22 years and 272 days, he is the youngest player to achieve the feat, joining an elite list that includes Rod Laver, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andre Agassi and Djokovic himself.

Alcaraz won his first major title at the US Open in 2022, becoming the youngest world No. 1 in ATP rankings history. He went on to win Wimbledon in 2023 and successfully defend the title in 2024, while also lifting the Roland Garros trophy in 2024 and 2025.
