Mexico made a winning start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating South Africa 2-0 before a packed crowd at Estadio Azteca in the tournament’s opening match.
The hosts controlled much of the contest from the outset and were rewarded when Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the World Cup, sending home supporters into celebration. Mexico enjoyed the majority of possession and repeatedly tested South Africa’s defence during the opening half.
Quinones continued to trouble the South African back line with his pace and movement and came close to adding a second goal before halftime. However, South Africa managed to limit the damage and went into the break trailing by a single goal.
The match turned further in Mexico’s favour shortly after the restart. South Africa midfielder Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red card after bringing down Brian Gutierrez as he raced through on goal, leaving the visitors with ten men.

South Africa’s frustrations deepened later in the match when Themba Zwane was dismissed for violent conduct, reducing his side to nine players and effectively ending any hopes of a comeback.
The drama continued deep into stoppage time when Mexico defender Cesar Montes was sent off for a reckless challenge. His dismissal meant the opening match ended with 19 players on the field after three red cards were shown.
Despite the late setback, Mexico secured three points and an ideal start to a tournament they are co-hosting. Goals from Quinones and Jimenez, combined with a dominant display for much of the evening, ensured the hosts opened their World Cup campaign on a positive note.
