The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has expressed deep concern over escalating tensions and ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Iran, urging global leaders to pursue dialogue and peaceful solutions.

In a statement issued from New Delhi, the bishops said they were saddened by the loss of innocent lives, particularly children caught in the conflict. The conference extended prayers to families mourning their loved ones and wished a speedy recovery for those injured in the violence.

CBCI President Anthony Cardinal Poola urged leaders of all nations involved in the conflict to choose diplomacy over confrontation.

“Violence and conflict only breed further suffering and despair. We urge all global leaders to prioritize human dignity and work collaboratively towards an amicable resolution. True strength lies not in the use of force, but in the unwavering pursuit of lasting peace,” he said.

The conference also called on Christians across India to pray for peace during the Lenten season, traditionally a time of reflection, fasting and penance.

Separately, church leaders in India have appealed to the faithful to observe Sunday, March 8, 2026, as a Day of Prayer for Peace amid growing instability in the Middle East. Special prayers have been encouraged during Mass for the protection of innocent lives and wisdom among world leaders.

The faithful have also been invited to recite the Rosary daily from March 8 to March 14 for peace, along with observing a day of fasting and prayer on Friday, March 13.

Church leaders said the initiative aims to promote unity, solidarity and spiritual reflection as communities around the world hope for an end to violence and the restoration of peace.
