Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations has called on the global body to hold Israel accountable for what he described as ongoing aggression against Iran.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, envoy Amir Saeid Iravani said the council must fulfil its responsibility to maintain international peace and security.

The communication alleged violations of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, claiming that attacks had resulted in civilian deaths and damage to infrastructure. The envoy also called for a formal investigation into what he termed violations of the UN Charter and international law.

Iravani warned against what he described as the normalisation of the use of force, stating that such actions could weaken the principles of the UN Charter. He added that the developments reflect a broader pattern of regional instability.

The letter reiterated Iran’s commitment to international law, while asserting that the country retains the right to defend its sovereignty and citizens. It also urged neighbouring countries to ensure their territories are not used for actions against Iran and called for adherence to principles of good neighbourliness.

Describing the reported military actions as a violation of international law, the envoy said the United Nations has an obligation to respond and hold those responsible accountable.

The communication also outlined the human and infrastructural impact of the conflict, citing claims of civilian casualties and damage to residential units, commercial buildings, medical facilities, and schools.

The current escalation follows strikes reported in late February targeting multiple locations in Tehran. Iranian authorities have since responded with missile and drone strikes, describing them as acts of self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
