Sony Pictures has confirmed that its upcoming adaptation of the video game Bloodborne will be developed as an R-rated animated feature, with the studio promising a version that stays faithful to the game’s violent and gothic roots.
Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, said during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation that the film will be “very true” to the gory spirit of Bloodborne. The game follows a traveller navigating a haunting, gothic city populated by nightmarish creatures.
Bloodborne was developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The upcoming film is being co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and content creator Sean McLoughlin, widely known as JackSepticEye. McLoughlin has built a large following through his long association with the game, with his gameplay content reaching millions of viewers.

Sony has also completed filming for a live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda. The film will be directed by Wes Ball, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason cast as Link and Princess Zelda. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto is attached as a producer.
Video game adaptations have emerged as a major driver of box office success in recent years. Titles such as A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have ranked among the highest-grossing releases in the post-pandemic period.
Meanwhile, production is underway on Netflix’s live-action Assassin’s Creed series, directed by Johan Renck. Filming began at Rome’s Cinecitta Studios, with additional cast members including Louis McCartney, Mirren Mack, Youssef Kerkour, and Sandra Guldberg-Kampp joining the project.
