Veteran Japanese animation director Tsutomu Shibayama has died at the age of 84 due to lung cancer, his studio confirmed. He passed away on March 6, 2026.
The announcement was made by Ajia-do Animation Works, where Shibayama had previously served as president and CEO. In a statement, the studio said he had played a pivotal role in shaping several landmark anime productions over decades.
Shibayama was best known for his work on the long-running Doraemon franchise. He directed the popular film series for more than 20 years and also served as chief director for the television adaptation, helping define the visual and narrative identity of one of Japan’s most enduring animated characters.
Before his association with Doraemon, Shibayama worked as an animation director on series such as Dokonjo Gaeru and Ganso Tensai Bakabon. Over the years, he contributed to several other well-known titles, including Nintama Rantaro, Chibi Maruko-chan, and Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori.
According to the studio, his funeral was held privately in keeping with the wishes of his family. The company has declined floral tributes and condolence visits, adding that a memorial service will be organised at a later date.

Shibayama’s work on Doraemon — a story about a robotic cat from the future guiding a young boy, Nobita — remains widely influential and continues to resonate with audiences across generations.
