Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, in association with the Department of Information and Publicity and Goa College of Art, will organise centenary year celebrations of cinematographer K. Vaikunth (Vaikunth Kuncolienkar), artist Padma Bhushan Laxman Pai and cartoonist Padma Vibhushan Mario Miranda from June 11 to June 13.
The three-day programme will feature an exhibition, film screenings, art and cartoon competitions, award presentations and a musical tribute dedicated to the contributions of the three Goan personalities.
The celebrations will begin on June 11 with the inauguration of an exhibition at 5.15 pm by film director Ramesh Sippy in the presence of PWD Minister Digambar Kamat and Damodar (Damu) Naik. The exhibition, to be held at the Black Box of Ravindra Bhavan, will showcase original works by Laxman Pai and Mario Miranda, along with rare photographs documenting the life and work of K. Vaikunth.
A commemorative function will follow at 5.30 pm at the Pai Tiatrist Auditorium. The day will conclude with a screening of the film Seeta Aur Geeta, directed by Ramesh Sippy and featuring cinematography by K. Vaikunth.
As part of the centenary celebrations, organisers had conducted the All Goa Padma Bhushan Laxman Pai Award Painting Competition and the Padma Vibhushan Mario Miranda Award Cartoon Competition. Selected entries from both competitions will be displayed at the exhibition from June 11 to June 15. Winners in each category will receive awards during the concluding ceremony.
The selected participants in the Laxman Pai Painting Competition for the 20 years and above category are Prasad Vaikunth Naik, Mudrika Eknath Chari, Sauntra Mohandas Bakhle, Vitesh Narayan Naik and Sachin Datta Revankar. In the below-20 category, the selected participants are Mayank Sanjay Naik, Teja Gurudas Majik, Dhanvi Devendra Tamse, Shreyash Babuso Naik and Pranathi Juttur.
For the Mario Miranda Cartoon Competition, the selected participants in the 20 years and above category are Urvish Uday Naik, Shruti Babuso Naik, Vilas Keshav Prabhu, John Socor Rodrigues and Zea Maria Fernandes. In the below-20 category, the selected participants are Gauravi Pravin Usapkar, Samar Chadrakant Satoskar, Jivya Jeevankumar Narvekar, Shreyash Babuso Naik and Suniti Shailesh Naik.
On June 12, audiences will be able to attend special screenings of Khushboo at 4.30 pm and Aandhi at 7 pm. Both films were directed by Gulzar and featured cinematography by K. Vaikunth.
The concluding ceremony will be held on June 13 at 4 pm. Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant is expected to attend as chief guest along with Digambar Kamat, Chairman of Kadamba Transport Corporation Ulhas Tuenkar and other dignitaries. During the event, winners of the painting and cartoon competitions will receive the Padma Bhushan Laxman Pai Painting Awards and the Padma Vibhushan Mario Miranda Cartoon Awards.
A musical tribute will follow at 4.45 pm, featuring artists from Mumbai performing songs associated with the work and era of K. Vaikunth. Vocalists Sandeep Ubale and Sharayu Date will be accompanied by Vivek Paranjape, Ajay Atre, Vishal Thelkar, Apurv Dravid, Anay Gadgil and Smita Gavhankar.
Entry to all programmes is free, subject to seat availability.
