Mapusa adds a second dry waste collection centre to improve recycling. The initiative includes support from Mondelez India Foods.

Mapusa has added a second dry waste collection centre (DWCC) as part of efforts to strengthen waste management and reduce plastic waste in the town.

The facility has been set up under the Plastics Lighthouse Project with support from Mondelez India Foods Pvt. Ltd., in partnership with Anubhuti Welfare Foundation. It is expected to improve the collection, sorting and recycling of dry waste.

The initiative aims to move Mapusa towards a net-zero plastic goal by improving infrastructure and encouraging public participation.

Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua De Souza said the new centre would help residents dispose of dry waste responsibly instead of dumping it on roadsides. He urged citizens to make use of the facility.

Officials associated with the project said the initiative has diverted over 4,000 metric tonnes of waste away from landfills over the past two years, including more than 350 metric tonnes of plastic.

The Material Recovery Facility at Cunchelim currently processes between 5 to 8 tonnes of dry waste daily, ensuring recyclable material enters formal recycling streams.

The project also focuses on segregation at source, with four-way and eight-way systems introduced across residential areas, institutions and commercial establishments. Eight resident welfare associations have achieved full segregation, with most of the waste being recyclable.

Awareness campaigns have reached a large section of Mapusa’s population, encouraging improved waste management practices at the household level.

Overall, more than 4,100 metric tonnes of waste have been diverted from landfills, with over 365 metric tonnes of plastic recycled as part of the initiative.
