Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, urging citizens to stand firm in defence of the principles and spirit of the Constitution.
Kharge unfurled the national flag at his residence at 10, Rajaji Marg to mark the occasion. In a message shared on X, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said safeguarding constitutional values was the need of the hour.
“It is the need of the hour that we stand firmly in defence of the principles and spirit of our Constitution. Justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity — these are the enduring values bestowed upon us by our founders, and safeguarding them is our sacred duty,” Kharge said.
He further called upon citizens to be prepared to make sacrifices to protect the Constitution, describing it as the true tribute to the sacrifices made by India’s ancestors. Extending his Republic Day wishes, Kharge said the occasion should inspire renewed commitment to constitutional ideals.
Republic Day is observed annually on January 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1950, marking the country’s transition into a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic. The day symbolises the culmination of India’s freedom struggle and the establishment of governance based on justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also extended Republic Day greetings, describing the Constitution as the greatest weapon for every Indian.
In his message, Gandhi said the Constitution serves as the voice of the people and a protective shield for citizens’ rights. He added that the strength of the Indian Republic rests on the foundation of equality and harmony enshrined in the Constitution.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also conveyed her Republic Day wishes, stating that the Constitution safeguards the interests of all Indians.
She said the Constitution guarantees liberty, equality, justice and fraternity to every citizen and described it as a shield protecting the nation’s 140 crore people, adding that the resolve to safeguard it remains unwavering.
