The Indian football team’s hopes of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 hang by a thread, but Head Coach Khalid Jamil remains optimistic ahead of the crucial return-leg encounter against Singapore at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao on Tuesday.
In what is effectively a must-win fixture, Jamil has bolstered his squad by calling up Mohun Bagan Super Giant defender Subhasish Bose and midfielder Lalengmawia Apuia Ralte. Their inclusion comes as a timely reinforcement following the suspension of veteran centre-back Sandesh Jhingan, whose absence leaves a void in India’s defensive setup.
“We required them (Bose and Apuia) because we don’t have extra left-backs and he’s (Sandesh Jhingan) suspended. Apuia deserves to be back because of his experience. I’ve seen him play his last game in the IFA Shield, and I think this is the right time for us to use his services,”
said Coach Khalid Jamil at the pre-match press conference on Monday.
Apuia’s return is expected to add stability in midfield, providing the much-needed balance between defence and attack, while Bose’s leadership could help steady a backline that struggled under pressure in the away leg.
India’s campaign in Group C stands on precarious ground following a 1–1 draw in Singapore on October 9, where Rahim Ali’s 90th-minute equaliser salvaged a point for a 10-man Indian side after Ikhsan Fandi had put the hosts ahead in first-half stoppage time.
The result lifted India to third place with just two points from three matches, behind Hong Kong, China (7 points) and Singapore (5 points). Bangladesh remain bottom with a single point. With only the top team from each group advancing, India’s margin for error has all but disappeared.
“They (Singapore) are a good side and are difficult to beat. But this time we are playing on our home ground and we’ll try to get a positive result,”
Jamil said, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back.
For India to stay in contention, they must win all three remaining matches and hope Hong Kong, China drop points. A victory by more than one goal against the group leaders could prove decisive on head-to-head advantage.
Any slip-up against Singapore or Hong Kong, especially if coupled with a Bangladesh upset, could end India’s campaign prematurely. Still, Jamil is counting on home support to make the difference in Margao.
“We are fully expecting the local fans to come out in numbers and support India. This is our country, and we need everyone’s support. We would love to have all the support we can get.”
As the Blue Tigers prepare to take the field, their faith will rest as much in tactical adjustments as in the roar of the Goan crowd—their twelfth man—in what could define India’s Asian Cup journey.
