External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas to discuss the ongoing conflict in Iran and the wider Gulf region.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said the discussion focused on the evolving situation in Iran and the Gulf. “Had a telecon with EU HRVP @kajakallas. Our discussions focused on the ongoing conflict in Iran and the Gulf,” he wrote.
The conversation comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following coordinated airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel across multiple Iranian cities on February 28. The strikes reportedly targeted military command centres, air-defence systems, missile sites and other key infrastructure.
The developments triggered a sharp escalation in hostilities across the region. Iran responded with ballistic missiles and drones targeting US assets and allied locations across the Middle East, including Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
As the conflict widened, Jaishankar has been in touch with several foreign ministers from Gulf countries to assess the situation and underline India’s concerns over regional stability.
He earlier spoke with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, stressing India’s interest in peace and stability in the region and the safety of the Indian community living there.
“Just spoke to Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, FM of Saudi Arabia. Exchanged views on the ongoing situation in the Gulf. Underlined India’s stakes in regional peace and stability and in the welfare of Indian community,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.
The External Affairs Minister also spoke with Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who briefed him on the latest developments in Kuwait and assured him about the welfare of the Indian community.
Jaishankar further held discussions with senior leaders from Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates as tensions continued to escalate in the Gulf region.
According to Jaishankar, the leaders assured India that their governments would take necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian nationals living in their countries.
The ongoing conflict has raised concerns over regional stability and disrupted aviation across parts of the Middle East, leaving many travellers stranded as airspace restrictions and flight cancellations affect international travel.
India continues to monitor the situation closely while emphasising the need for dialogue and diplomacy to ease tensions in the region.
