The Federation of Saint Kitts & Nevis marked a diplomatic milestone with the inauguration of its High Commission in New Delhi on April 7, signalling a stronger push to deepen ties with India across diplomacy, trade and cultural exchange.

The ceremony began with a ribbon-cutting led by India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, alongside Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saint Kitts & Nevis, and Gurdip Dev Bath, the High Commissioner to India. Special Envoy Sunil Gehani and his spouse Dimple Gidwani were also present.

In their addresses, both ministers spoke about the scope of the partnership, pointing to opportunities in trade, investment and expanded diplomatic engagement.

A traditional lamp-lighting ceremony followed, marking what officials described as the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations.

The formal proceedings transitioned into informal interactions, with diplomats and envoys from various countries engaging in discussions, reflecting Saint Kitts & Nevis’ growing international outreach.

Denzil Douglas, who served as Prime Minister of Saint Kitts & Nevis for over two decades and now holds the foreign affairs portfolio, continues to play a central role in shaping the federation’s foreign policy and economic engagement.

High Commissioner Gurdip Dev Bath has received international recognition, including a state honour from Barbados for facilitating COVID-19 vaccine support across Caribbean nations.

Special Envoy Sunil Gehani, based in the Caribbean since 1998, is involved in multiple business ventures along with Dimple Gidwani and is known to be associated with the ruling Labour Party in Saint Kitts & Nevis.

Beyond diplomacy, Saint Kitts & Nevis continues to position itself as a global destination for tourism and investment. The island nation maintains connectivity with major international cities including Miami, New York, London and Toronto, along with key Caribbean hubs such as Antigua, Barbados and San Juan.

Tourism remains a major economic driver, with the country welcoming over a million cruise passengers annually. It also hosts one of the region’s more advanced private jet terminals catering to high-net-worth travellers and investors. The country is set to become a homeport for Carnival Cruise Line starting in 2027.

The federation’s Citizenship by Investment Programme remains a key offering, providing visa-free access to over 160 countries, including the UK and several European destinations. One of Sunil Gehani’s associated companies is involved in facilitating this programme.

With the opening of the High Commission, both countries are expected to explore new avenues of cooperation in investment, trade, tourism and cultural exchange, marking a step towards long-term collaboration.
