Indian-origin Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy has secured the Republican nomination for the post of Ohio Governor, setting up a direct contest against Democrat Amy Acton in the November election.
The biotech entrepreneur emerged victorious in the Republican primary after a campaign season that saw several high-profile contenders either withdraw or opt out of the race altogether. Attorney General Dave Yost stepped aside after former US President Donald Trump and the state Republican establishment rallied behind Ramaswamy, while former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel did not enter the contest.
Ramaswamy defeated businessman Casey Putsch in Tuesday’s polling. Another candidate, Heather Hill, remained on the ballot, but votes cast in her favour were not counted after legal complications involving her running mate.
The Republican nominee’s rise within American conservative politics accelerated during the 2024 presidential campaign, where he positioned himself as a strong Trump ally. Following the presidential race, he was briefly linked with the Department of Government Efficiency initiative alongside Elon Musk before stepping away to focus on the Ohio gubernatorial bid.
The campaign now moves into what is expected to be a high-profile and financially intensive general election. Financial disclosures indicate that Ramaswamy’s campaign raised nearly USD 5 million in early 2026 and also received a personal loan of USD 25 million from the candidate himself, giving the campaign an estimated USD 30 million in available funds.

His Democratic opponent Amy Acton, the former director of the Ohio Department of Public Health, reportedly raised over USD 5 million and retained around USD 3 million in reserve heading into the next phase of campaigning.
The Republican candidate has also received backing from influential party figures in Ohio, including Vice President JD Vance, who publicly confirmed that he voted for Ramaswamy in the primary.
The November contest will determine the successor to outgoing Governor Mike DeWine, who is term-limited. Ohio remains a crucial political battleground, though Republicans have maintained a strong edge in recent statewide elections, including Donald Trump’s double-digit victory margin in the 2024 presidential race.
The nomination victory marks another milestone for Ramaswamy, whose political rise has been closely watched both within the United States and among sections of the Indian diaspora globally.
