Singer-songwriter and guitarist Bruce Springsteen has released a surprise protest song titled Streets of Minneapolis, marking one of the most politically charged moments of his career.
In a message shared on social media, Springsteen said the song was written, recorded, and released within days as a response to what he described as state violence in Minneapolis. He dedicated the track to the people of the city, immigrant communities, and to the memory of two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
According to Springsteen, the song addresses the circumstances surrounding recent immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis and the deaths of the two individuals during related incidents.
Streets of Minneapolis opens with a full-band arrangement and features lyrics that reference the city’s streets, federal enforcement presence, and public protests. The song also pays tribute to residents who demonstrated against the operations, while naming Good and Pretti in its closing verses.
The release follows heightened public attention on immigration enforcement actions in Minneapolis after the deaths of Renee Good, 37, a mother of three who was shot on January 7 during protests, and Alex Pretti, who was killed on January 24 after being restrained by federal officers during an operation.
Springsteen’s latest release continues his long history of responding to social and political events through music. Over the decades, he has addressed issues including police violence, war, public health crises, and civil rights in several of his previous works.
