The Goa Dhangar Samaj has criticised remarks made by Alton regarding the long-pending demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Gouly-Dhangar community, describing them as politically motivated and based on a lack of understanding of the issue.
In a statement, the Samaj said Alton should study the matter in depth before making public comments on the community’s struggle. It also objected to his suggestion that Shri Babu Kavlekar should have joined a political party only after securing ST status for the community.
“The community has advised Alton to first study the issue in depth before making irresponsible statements. His suggestion that Shri Babu Kavlekar should have joined a political party only on the condition of securing ST status reflects his complete lack of understanding of the community’s struggle,” the statement said.
The Samaj maintained that Shri Babu Kavlekar has consistently supported the Dhangar community and has remained one of the strongest voices backing its movement for Scheduled Tribe status.
“The Samaj asserted that Shri Babu Kavlekar has always been one of the strongest voices and pillars of support for the Dhangar community and its ST movement,” the statement added.
The organisation also urged Alton to refrain from making what it described as misleading and politically motivated comments on an issue that concerns the rights and identity of the Gouly-Dhangar community.
