Goa will mark the beginning of India’s first completely digital census on April 1, with the launch of the self-enumeration phase for houselisting.
For the first time, residents will be able to submit household details online through a dedicated portal, which will also be accessible via mobile devices.
The self-enumeration phase will remain open until April 15. This will be followed by a field verification exercise from April 16 to May 15 as part of the first phase, focusing on houselisting and housing data collection.
Director of Census Operations Cheshta Yadav said the census in Goa will be conducted in two stages. The first phase begins in April 2026, while the second phase, covering population enumeration, is scheduled nationwide from February 9 to February 28, 2027.
The census will be conducted using the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS), making it the first digital exercise of its kind in India.
Officials said the process will include 33 questions, with around 3,086 enumerators deployed across the state.
Konkani has been included in the census system for the first time and is among 16 languages available on the platform, aimed at improving accessibility for residents.
The exercise is being carried out under the Census Act of 1948 and will be the eighth census conducted since Independence.
For administrative purposes, Goa has been divided into 26 operational units, referred to as charges, across North Goa, South Goa, and the newly designated Kushavati district. Enumerators have completed their training ahead of the rollout.
Authorities have urged residents to participate in the process and provide accurate information, stating that reliable data is essential for planning and development.
