Shirodkar says WRD will prioritise long-pending works across Goa. Focus remains on farmers, irrigation, and water storage solutions.

Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Thursday said that completing long-pending works across Goa would be a priority for the department, with a focus on supporting farmers and improving water management.

He was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the improvement of a bund and repairs to a sluice gate at Valpoi Manos in Carambolim village.

Shirodkar said the Water Resources Department (WRD) is closely linked to agriculture and must directly benefit farmers. He added that several projects pending for five to ten years across the state, from Pernem to Canacona, are now being taken up.

The minister highlighted the role of bandharas in water conservation, noting that Goa receives substantial rainfall for only a few months each year. “We get a lot of water, but only for four months. We need to store it, and bandharas are an option,” he said, adding that around 100 bandharas have been taken up, of which about 90 are complete.

He also referred to major irrigation projects such as the Salaulim dam, the Anjunem dam, and the Tillari agreement with Maharashtra, under which Goa receives a significant share of water.

Shirodkar said the current focus is on completing projects that improve irrigation and ensure water availability for agriculture, while maintaining the state’s fields and natural landscape.

Local MLA Rajesh Faldessai said that strengthening bunds, clearing nullahs, and maintaining fields are essential for agriculture and flood prevention. He added that proposals related to retaining walls and flood mitigation are being addressed promptly.

Faldessai also noted ongoing works in areas such as Cumbharjua, Divar, and Carambolim, stating that continued efforts are required to ensure timely completion.

Sarpanch Kusta Salelkar and panch member Angela Valadares were also present at the event.
