Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday released Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military at an event in South Block, New Delhi.
The vision document, prepared by Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, outlines a long-term blueprint to modernise India’s armed forces and align them with the country’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The roadmap details a series of strategic reforms, capability upgrades and organisational changes intended to help the military respond to evolving geopolitical and technological challenges. It envisions transforming the armed forces into an integrated, multi-domain force capable of responding across the full spectrum of conflict while safeguarding India’s expanding strategic interests.
A key focus of the document is strengthening coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force through greater operational integration and joint planning. The roadmap emphasises improved synergy among the services to enhance operational readiness and overall military effectiveness.
The document also highlights the growing role of advanced technologies and innovation in modern warfare. It calls for the development of a modern training framework and the adoption of emerging technologies to ensure the armed forces remain adaptable to future security threats.
Another major pillar is the push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The roadmap stresses the importance of developing indigenous technologies and strengthening domestic defence production to meet national security needs while contributing to economic growth.
The plan outlines a phased approach to capability development, identifying short-term, medium-term and long-term priorities for military modernisation, institutional reforms and strategic partnerships.
It also underlines the need for a broader national approach to security, integrating military capability with diplomatic, technological and economic strengths to address emerging challenges.
Senior defence officials present at the event included Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Vice Chief of the Army Staff Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh.
