The Gauhati High Court on Friday rejected an anticipatory bail petition filed by Pawan Khera in connection with an FIR lodged by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings linked to allegations made by Khera against the Chief Minister’s wife.
Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that Khera should surrender before the law and appear in Guwahati. Speaking to ANI in Uttar Dinajpur, Sarma stated, “I think Pawan Khera should surrender before the law. He should come to Guwahati and surrender there.”
The case has seen multiple legal interventions. The Supreme Court of India had earlier declined to extend Khera’s transit anticipatory bail, which had been granted by the Telangana High Court. Khera had sought an extension to enable him to approach a competent court in Assam.
The Supreme Court’s refusal followed a petition by Assam Police challenging the Telangana High Court’s decision to grant one week of transit anticipatory bail from April 10, subject to conditions. As per that order, Khera was required to approach the jurisdictional court in Assam for further relief.
The FIR filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma pertains to allegations made by Khera regarding passport and property disclosures. He had claimed that Sharma held three passports — from India, the UAE, and Egypt — and owned undisclosed luxury properties in Dubai, along with a company in Wyoming, United States.
The Sarma family has denied the allegations, describing the documents cited as “AI-generated fabrications” circulated by Pakistani social media groups.
With the Gauhati High Court now rejecting anticipatory bail, Khera is expected to seek relief from a competent court in Assam or comply with calls to surrender.
