Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday accused the Congress of subjecting the Assamese people to decades of injustice and neglect, while asserting that the BJP-led government has taken steps to safeguard the state’s land, culture, language and identity.
Addressing election rallies in Lakhimpur and Dhakuakhana, Sonowal said the upcoming Assembly elections are crucial for the future of the Assamese community, which he said has historically struggled to preserve its identity.
He alleged that during decades of Congress rule, indigenous communities faced sustained challenges, including issues linked to illegal infiltration. Sonowal said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, measures have been taken to strengthen protection of land rights and cultural identity in the state.
Referring to the Assam Movement, Sonowal said people had protested for years against illegal immigration, but their concerns were not addressed by successive governments at the time.
He also highlighted development initiatives undertaken over the past decade, including infrastructure improvements, welfare schemes and connectivity projects. According to him, major projects such as the Bogibeel Bridge and the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge have improved connectivity in regions like Lakhimpur.
Sonowal said land rights have been granted to indigenous families, with distribution of land pattas over the years. He added that programmes focused on youth employment, women’s welfare and education have contributed to social development.
Speaking at another rally in Ghilamara, Sonowal said public response to the NDA government reflects continued support for its policies. He urged voters to support BJP candidates in the constituencies, stating that further development and infrastructure expansion remain priorities.
