The Haj Committee of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for the construction of a new Haj House at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai.
The proposed facility will function as a Transit-cum-Training and Facilitation Centre for Haj pilgrims preparing for their journey to Mecca. The MoU was signed at the office of the CPWD.
The project has received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India, through a letter issued on January 21, 2026. The construction is estimated to cost ₹225 crore and will be funded by the Haj Committee of India.
Under the agreement, CPWD will be responsible for planning, designing and executing the project according to its established procedures. The department will oversee the construction to ensure adherence to approved guidelines, quality standards and completion timelines.
The proposed centre will serve as an integrated facility offering training, orientation, accommodation and facilitation services for Haj pilgrims before departure. The initiative is expected to strengthen support systems for pilgrims and improve their preparedness for the pilgrimage.
The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, located close to the proposed site, is expected to further enhance connectivity for Haj pilgrims. Once operational, the airport is likely to simplify travel arrangements and improve logistical coordination for those undertaking the pilgrimage.
Officials said the new Haj House will enhance pre-departure preparation and accommodation support for pilgrims travelling from different parts of the country. The facility is also expected to function as a hub for training and logistical coordination.
Earlier, Secretary of the Ministry of Minority Affairs Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar visited the proposed site in November last year. The visit included officials from the Haj Committee of India and CPWD.
During the visit, officials reviewed the layout and design plans for the facility and discussed the project’s implementation timeline and technical aspects. Connectivity, logistics and supporting amenities were also assessed to ensure the centre meets the needs of Haj pilgrims.
The proposed Haj House is expected to strengthen infrastructure and institutional support for pilgrimage-related activities once completed.
