The Kolkata Police on Monday imposed a blanket ban on victory processions, rallies and public celebrations across the city as counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections continued.
In a formal notification, the police stated that no political party or group would be allowed to hold any form of public celebration on May 4. The move, officials said, is aimed at maintaining order and preventing disruption during the sensitive counting process.
Authorities underlined that the restriction comes at a time of high political stakes, with tight security arrangements already in place across Kolkata. “The importance of maintaining a peaceful environment during this critical time” was emphasised in the order, which seeks to ensure normalcy throughout the day.
The police clarified that victory processions may be permitted from May 5 onwards, but only after obtaining prior approval from the Officer-in-Charge of the relevant police station. All permitted events must strictly follow existing rules, regulations and specific conditions laid down in the approval.
The notification warned that any violation would invite legal action as per the law. Officers-in-charge of all police stations have been directed to remain vigilant and ensure strict compliance.
Tight contest reflected in early trends
Early counting trends showed the Bharatiya Janata Party leading in 173 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress was ahead in 85 constituencies. Smaller parties, including BGPM, AJUP and CPI(M), were leading in one seat each.
Officials noted that the counting process is still underway, with final results yet to be declared by the Election Commission of India.
Record turnout in elections
West Bengal recorded one of its highest voter turnouts since independence. Phase II saw a polling percentage of 91.66%, while Phase I recorded 93.19%, taking the combined turnout to 92.47%.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress secured a decisive mandate, winning 213 out of 294 seats with around 48% vote share. The BJP emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats and approximately 38% of the votes, marking a significant rise from its previous performance. The Left-Congress alliance failed to win any seats.
With counting still in progress, authorities continue to prioritise law and order, keeping celebrations on hold until results are formally declared.
