NHRC Seeks Report On Alleged Torture Of Rajkot Journalist

NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of alleged police torture of a journalist in Rajkot. Notice issued to Gujarat DGP seeking report within two weeks.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports alleging unlawful detention and torture of a journalist by the Rajkot Crime Branch police in Gujarat.

The incident is reported to have occurred on March 22, 2026. According to the Commission, the journalist was allegedly stripped naked, suspended upside down, and subjected to physical torture, resulting in serious injuries.

“The contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of human rights violations of the victim,” the NHRC stated.

The Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Gujarat, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to include the current status of the investigation and the health condition of the victim.

As per reports, the journalist operates an online media outlet. He was admitted to Rajkot Civil Hospital on March 23, a day after the alleged incident, with multiple injuries.

The NHRC has also taken note of allegations that the police attempted to prevent hospital staff from admitting the victim. The journalist was reportedly threatened with false criminal cases and demolition of his residence.

Further investigation into the matter is awaited.
