Janata Dal (United) MLA Anant Kumar Singh on Sunday said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will resign from his position as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, Singh said the decision was taken despite concerns within the party. He indicated that several members were not in favour of the move but Kumar proceeded with it.
The development follows Kumar’s recent election as the president of the Janata Dal (United). He was elected unopposed after no other candidate filed a nomination. The election process concluded with scrutiny and withdrawal deadlines earlier this month.
Earlier in March, Kumar had also filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections. In a message accompanying his nomination, he expressed his intent to contribute to both state and national legislatures, while reiterating his focus on the development of Bihar. He also extended support to the current cabinet.
Kumar, 75, is one of Bihar’s longest-serving chief ministers. His political career has included multiple shifts in alliances, alternating between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and opposition coalitions over the past decade. Despite these changes, he has retained his position as a central figure in Bihar politics.
His latest move is being seen as part of a transition towards a more active role at the national level, following his return to Parliament through the Rajya Sabha.
