Prashant Kishor questions Nitish Kumar’s future. Says BJP leadership will decide the state’s next Chief Minister.

Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor has said that the Chief Ministerial face in Bihar will ultimately be decided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, indicating that incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may no longer be central to the decision.

Speaking to reporters in Bhagalpur on Sunday, Kishor raised concerns over Kumar’s health and questioned the ruling alliance’s commitments to the people of Bihar.

“He has not been healthy since before the elections, which is why he is being removed, but who betrayed the people of Bihar? His party and the BJP… Who will give 1 crore jobs to the youth of Bihar now?…,” Kishor said.

He added that the decision on the next Chief Minister would rest with the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party. “The Chief Minister’s face today will be the one who PM Modi and Amit Shah want,” he said.

The remarks come amid recent political developments in the state. On March 5, Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections and expressed support for the new Cabinet. In a message, Kumar said he remained committed to the development of Bihar and would continue to offer his guidance.

The National Democratic Alliance welcomed Kumar’s decision, calling it a continuation of his role in parliamentary democracy.

Last week, Nitish Kumar was also elected unopposed as the president of Janata Dal (United), with no other candidate filing a nomination.

Nitish Kumar, one of Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Ministers, has had a political career marked by multiple shifts in alliances. Since 2013, he has alternated between partnerships with the BJP-led NDA and the Mahagathbandhan, which includes the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress.

Despite these shifts, Kumar has remained a dominant political figure in the state, most recently taking oath as Chief Minister for a tenth time after the 2025 Assembly elections.
