State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFi, also known as Wi-Fi Calling, making the service available to customers across all telecom circles in the country.

The announcement was made on Jan 1st, with the Ministry of Communications stating that the service will enable seamless and high-quality voice connectivity even in locations with weak mobile network coverage.

Voice over WiFi allows customers to make and receive voice calls and messages using a Wi-Fi network, ensuring reliable communication in areas such as homes, offices, basements and remote locations where mobile signals are often inconsistent. Calls are made using the customer’s existing mobile number and standard phone dialer, without the need for third-party applications.

The service is based on IP Multimedia Subsystem technology and supports smooth handovers between Wi-Fi and mobile networks, ensuring uninterrupted calls as users move between coverage zones.

According to the ministry, the service is particularly beneficial for rural and remote areas where mobile network coverage may be limited, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection is available. Customers can use Wi-Fi connections from BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband service providers.

VoWiFi is being offered free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calls. The service is also expected to help reduce congestion on mobile networks by offloading voice traffic to Wi-Fi infrastructure.

The ministry said the rollout of VoWiFi marks an important step in BSNL’s network modernisation programme and reflects its focus on improving connectivity in underserved and hard-to-reach areas.

VoWiFi is supported on most modern smartphones, with users required to enable Wi-Fi Calling in their handset settings. For device compatibility and assistance, customers can visit the nearest BSNL customer service centre or contact the BSNL helpline at 18001503.

BSNL is also preparing for the launch of its 5G services. The company has completed pilot projects for 5G and conducted trials for the upgradation of its existing 4G networks.
