Confident Group founder and chairman C J Roy was found dead at his office in Bengaluru on Friday in what police have described as an apparent case of suicide.

According to officials, the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Ashok Nagar police station. Roy allegedly shot himself inside his office premises while Income Tax department searches were underway.

Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh confirmed that forensic science laboratory (FSL) and scene of crime officer (SOCO) teams were deployed immediately after the incident.

“An incident occurred today within the limits of Ashok Nagar police station, where the chairman of the Confident Group, C J Roy, shot himself. The SOCO team and the FSL team are investigating the matter. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead,” Singh said.

The police commissioner added that Income Tax officials had been conducting searches at Roy’s premises for the past two to three days as part of an ongoing investigation. A team from Kerala was also involved in the operation.

“The Income Tax team had been searching his premises for the past two to three days. The police are in contact with the family members, who are currently not in India and are expected to arrive today. As of now, it appears to be a case of suicide. We are yet to receive complete details of the raids,” Singh said.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said a high-level investigation would be conducted into the circumstances surrounding Roy’s death. In a statement, Shivakumar’s office said the incident allegedly occurred after Roy sought a short break during questioning by Income Tax officials.

“When he was being questioned, he reportedly asked for five minutes, went inside, and the incident occurred,” the statement said.

Shivakumar said the government had sought a detailed report and assured that all facts would be placed before the public after a thorough inquiry.

“This should not have happened. He was a respected businessman. A detailed investigation will be conducted to uncover the truth,” the statement added.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) Akshay Machindra Hakay said preliminary findings indicate that the death occurred between 3 pm and 3.15 pm and involved a gunshot injury.

“Prima facie, it appears to be a death by gunshot. The crime scene is being thoroughly analysed, and the investigation is underway,” Hakay said.

Officials reiterated that forensic and crime scene teams are continuing their examination of the premises, while police await further inputs from the Income Tax department. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
