India suffered a 0-3 defeat against Iran in their second match of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 at Hisor Central Stadium, Tajikistan, on Monday, September 1.
After a goalless first half, Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh opened the scoring for Iran in the 60th minute. Late goals from substitutes Ali Alipour (89’) and Mehdi Taremi (90+6’) sealed the win for the Asian giants.
Defending champions Iran, ranked 20th in the world and 113 spots above India, dominated early play, testing India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu with several attempts. India’s defence steadied thereafter, keeping clear-cut chances at bay and frustrating Iran’s attacking moves.
India’s first real opportunity came in the 24th minute when Irfan Yadwad laid off a cross from Suresh Singh Wangjam to Nikhil Prabhu, but the midfielder’s shot was blocked. The Blue Tigers gained more confidence in the latter stages of the first half, with Vikram Partap Singh creating some threats down the right wing, though Iran managed to contain the danger.

The second half saw Iran maintain possession, eventually breaking the deadlock through Hosseinzadeh’s close-range finish after Rahul Bheke’s block. India coach Khalid Jamil introduced Manvir Singh, Mahesh Naorem, and Jithin MS to bolster the attack. While the changes sparked a few promising moves, India struggled to test Iran’s defence consistently.
In the final minutes, Iran’s experience shone through. Alipour doubled the lead in the 89th minute, and Taremi added a third in stoppage time, handing India a 0-3 defeat.
India will now look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures, hoping to learn from the challenges posed by one of Asia’s strongest sides.
